Tips for Tile installation Ottawa
Tile is one of the most affordable and durable materials to use on your floors. They also come in a variety of designs and colors, which makes them very appealing. However, installation of tiles can be time-consuming and can make your projects very expensive. At Gordmay, we believe that tile installation Ottawa should be handled by professionals. If you have some experience in handling DIY projects, you can try installing tiles on your floors or walls yourself.
Here are some tips to help you out:
Plan for the Project
Before you actually start working on the project, measure the area that you need to tile – see our How to Measure for Tile blog if you require more information. If you want to get the installation done quickly, you might want a solid color or plain design. This way you won’t have to spend time matching the tiles according to the design. If you do choose a complex design, it’s a good idea to arrange the tiles beforehand to make sure that they look good together.
Try a Dry Layout First
A dry layout would ensure that you have enough tiles for the project. With a dry layout, you can also get accurate measurements for cutting tiles that will be placed in corners and near the walls. You need to start by placing the tile in the center of the room and work your way to the outsides.
Prepare the Surface
If you want the tiles to sit securely and be resilient, you need to install them on a perfectly level surface. If the surface isn’t level, the tile will not sit well and will be more likely to break. You need to check whether the surface is flat with the help of a leveling tool. For floor applications, you can pour a self-leveling compound which will allow you to make sure that the surface is level and ready for tiling. For backsplash applications that had existing tile that you removed – we suggest replacing the drywall on the backsplash area first, do not apply new tile to an uneven surface or one that has had tiles already applied/removed.
Thinset Mortar and Tile Installation
Once the surface is ready, you need to mix thinset with a latex additive until it is of the consistency similar to mayonnaise. You then need to use the trowel to scratch the surface and then start setting the tile down gently and down a little. If you are not an experienced installer, you should use spacers to maintain an even distance between the tiles. After the tile adhesive has dried, that gap should then be scraped clean and vacuumed out in preparation to apply the grout.
At Gordmay, we always recommend that you call in a professional for your tile installation Ottawa. While working on a DIY project can be satisfactory, the results might not be. You can contact us if you want help. Our number is 613 715 4841. You can also fill in this contact us form.
BACKSPLASH TILE
SHOWER FLOOR TILE
For a center drain application as shown below, we suggest selecting 1″ or 2″ floor tiles. Your shower floor must be properly sloped for drainage purposes and these tiles are small enough to enable our installers to ensure the proper incline towards the drain.
BATHROOM TILE
For all of our tile installations – excluding backsplashes, we recommend using an approved Schluter®-DITRA system which provides extra protection for your investment.
